We are the Pelicans

Woodlake Elementary,a National Blue Ribbon School, was established in 1987 and is nestled in the woods surrounded by natural wetlands south of Highway 190 in Mandeville, Louisiana. Lake Pontchartrain is located three blocks south of our school which is visited by students for walking field trips and various activities throughout the school year. The campus consists of 36 indoor classrooms, 4 portable buildings, a cafeteria, a library and an air-conditioned gymnasium, and outside physical fitness course, and a well-defined nature trail with an outdoor classroom bordering on Bayou Castine. The white pelican was chosen as our school mascot to sustain the Louisiana theme.

The school serves over 600 students in grades Preschool through third grade from a wide variety of backgrounds. The one non-cat preschool, five kindergartens, one transitional first grade, seven regular first grades, two multiage classes, six second grades, and six third grades are served by a faculty and staff of 60 employees under the leadership of Jean Krieger, principal and Tara Dragon, assistant principal.

Special education services include speech therapy, academic and enrichment gifted, academic lab. AIM (Accessing Instruction in the Mainstream) lets many special education students receive services in the regular classroom.

At Woodlake, each day begins with Morning Meeting, a general assembly of students, teachers, and staff. Once a week all the students receive music and physical education instruction from certified teachers. Woodlake's Award-Winning PTA is a parent volunteer force that gives thousands of hours of time each year to enhance student achievement through a wide variety of programs.

The students of Woodlake Elementary find their school "A Fun Place To Learn!"

Woodlake's Philosophy

The faculty and staff at Woodlake Elementary School believe that the school’s responsibility is to help each student develop into a responsible and productive citizen in the school, home, and community. We believe that each student should be provided with an educational program that fulfills his academic, social, emotional, and physical needs. We believe that the educational development of the individual student is the basic responsibility of the school but must be shared with the home and community in order to insure the child’s fullest development and the fulfillment of his needs. We believe our program should respond to and build upon every child’s uniqueness.

The school environment and atmosphere should not only reflect that school is a good place to be, but also that it is a safe place for explorations, questioning and self-expression so that learning becomes fun, exciting, and an integral part of each child’s life. Self-discipline, self-motivation, perseverance and inquisitiveness should be emphasized. Woodlake is a school where it is acceptable to make mistakes because we believe from mistakes comes learning.

Our Morning Meetings provide daily opportunities for the school-wide application of our philosophy. Morning Meetings are designed to include all of the programs and people throughout our school. This is also where our school-wide discipline plan is taught and reinforced in a positive manner.
